Tourist souvenir from the French second Empire representing the return of Napoleon I statue during the second empire ordered by Napoleon the third . The same colonne was destroyed during the commune of 1871 .
The original Vendôme Column at the centre of the square was erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz.
The sculptor Antoine Chaudet chose to represent Napoleon as a Roman emperor, his forehead crowned with a laurel wreath, holding a winged Victory (i.e., a statue of a female figure symbolising military victory) in his left hand and a lowered shortsword (or glave) in his right. The column was inaugurated on the 15th August 1810, Napoleon I’s birthday.
The guide book edited by " les magasins du Louvre" also shows the paris of Napoleon III ( 1848 to 1871 ) with the bustling new stores and tourist attraction of this era ( pre eiffel tower ) . The 2 last reference pictures illustrate the removal and return of the Napoleon statue during the change of regime .
